The Firefly story started when the China Foundation of Culture and Arts for Children informed us about the Xiao Ju Deng Deaf-Mute Children’s Recovery Centre. We were interested in helping those with need, therefore they introduced us to the Director of Teaching and Research of the center, Li Juan Gao. At first, there were preliminary talks about the general history of the institution and what their current situation was.

UNDERSTANDING COCHLEAR IMPLANTS
Cochlear implants are a unique sound conversion device; they are the irreplaceable lifelines of these children and will continue to be so throughout their entire lives. The cochlear implant first takes in analog sound waves and transfers them into electrical signals to the speech processor. The speech processor then processes the electrical signal making it digital while stimulating the auditory nerves in the ear. The transmission/receiving stimulator will take in the processed electrical signal through the temporal scalp into the inner ear electrode, causing the electrode conduction to stimulate the nerves, producing a degree of hearing for the children. However, this signal to the brain is in no way the same as the sound we perceive. They lack many details of hearing that we hear; although we don't have the means to fully comprehend their experience – to truly understand what their experience of hearing, you would need to have an implant of your own – it can be inferred that the sound they hear can be comparable to a malfunctioning doll voice at best.
THREE PHASES OF FIREFLY RECOVERY
The Three Phases of Firefly Recovery is a beneficial plan to ubiquitously help the group of deaf-mute people with the primary purpose of to both physically and mentally give support to the children and young adults with hearing disabilities. Three different stages will be carried out, each aimed towards different age groups and needs. To proceed with the three phases, not only the members of the Firefly Charity will be involved, but the community will also be part of it: including students, parents, and friends.
REVENUE STREAMS AND METHODS OF FUNDRAISING
As a start-up club without any funding or means to provide for ourselves in the beginning, the first round of donations came from many eager, enthusiastic friends and family; funds were collected through a donation platform called Zhui Meng Chou (a philanthropic crowdfunding app aimed at funding dreams and helping out those in need).
